What do you use a laminar flow cabinet for? In this article we first explain how the sterile constant airflow of a laminar flow cabinet is created and in which processes and sectors it is often used. What is a laminar flow cabinet?
With a laminar flow cabinet we create a sterile space that is free of dust particles and bacteria. The laminar flow cabinet, also called LAF cabinet or clean bench, consists of a glass door with a small opening along the entire width, fans and industry-standard HEPA or ULPA filters and a stainless steel worktop. The filter unit sucks the air in the cabinet through the filter and then pushes it in a very constant flow in one direction into the cabinet. The result is a laminar flow: a constant, sterile air flow without turbulence.
There are different types of laminar flow cabinets. If desired, we can advise based on the application:
- Laminar flow from top to bottom (downflow)
- Laminar flow from bottom to top (upflow)
- Laminar flow from back to front (crossflow)
Applications laminar flow cabinet
The laminar flow cabinet is a workplace for critical operations or processes where the risk of contamination is harmful or undesirable, such as in experiments, test and research environments or production environments. Laminar flow cabinets protect personnel, products and processes in:

Properties laminar flow cabinets
The Lab Companion laminar flow cabinets are designed to comply with ISO Class 4 (ISO 14644-1). They have a digital control interface with display both on the outside of the cabinet and inside, for ease of use. The flow cabinets contain a flow rate sensor with automatic and adjustable control.
The flow cabinets also contain a UV lamp for sterilization applications. If the glass door is accidentally opened when the UV lamp is on, it will turn off automatically for eye safety. The glass door itself is of course not transparent to UV light.
