Buying a hazardous material cabinet: what properties are you looking for?
Buying a hazardous materials cabinet is sometimes quite a task, it is difficult to see the wood for the trees. Many cabinets that are sold as hazardous goods cabinets do not meet all requirements – as prescribed by the NEN (or NBN) EN-14470-1 standard – or are simply not suitable for all purposes. At the same time, there are various features and options that can make the difference. We look at the latter in this article: what configuration options are available with the hazardous material cabinets.
Why do we buy a hazardous materials cabinet? In the first place, because it is important to protect employees, colleagues and the environment against the risks that arise from working with hazardous substances. The hazardous substances cabinet helps with this because it isolates the hazardous substances from ignition sources, prevents substances from spontaneously igniting due to for example a high temperature, and extracts flammable gases from the cabinet.
Buying Hazardous Materials Cabinet: Configuration
Not every hazardous materials cabinet can handle above mentioned scenarios, but every Laser 2000 cabinet can be equipped with different options. We share the most important ones so that you have a good idea of which options match your wishes and environment.
Our hazardous materials cabinets are always designed with triple isolated walls and doors, polyphenol resin coated interior and epoxy powder coated shelves, which can carry up to 80 kg of load.
Several options deserve some extra attention:
We discuss:
- Suction
- Filtration
- Automatic door closing
- Automatic ventilation shut-off
- Drip tray
Extraction of hazardous substances cabinet
In various environments, the generation of (highly) flammable gas creates additional safety risks. That is why all cabinets can be equipped with a so-called Extraction module that can filter such gases that arise in the hazardous substances cabinet. This module functions without having to install a separate drain, which makes installation and commissioning of the cabinet easier.
Filtration hazardous substances cabinet
Our high performance extraction module is available with different filters, optimized for your application. The standard filter is the “Complex-Carbon” unit: With a large amorphous surface, fully impregnated, this filter is suitable for both physical and chemical absorption.
You choose from our following filters:
- Complex Carbon: a filter unit for a wide range of chemicals such as acids, ammonia and aldehydes.
- Acid: specially designed for filtering gases such as HCl (hydrochloric acid), HF (hydrogen fluoride), H2S (hydrogen sulphide), and CH3COOH (acetic acid)
- Formaldehyde: As the name suggests, designed for formaldehyde, acetaldehyde etc.
- Ammonia/Amines: filters out gases such as NH3 (ammonia), (CH3)3N (trimethylamine) etc.
- HEPA: particle filter for 99.999% toxic dust and other 0.3 micron particles.
Automatic door closing chemical cabinet
As soon as the temperature reaches 50°C, the door of the chemical cabinet closes automatically and thus prevents the ignition of the hazardous substances present in the cabinet.
Automatic ventilation closing chemical cabinet
If the ambient temperature rises above 70°C, the exhaust holes and ventilation openings will also close. This means that the heat flow from the outside is completely limited and the inside temperature remains constant for a long time. Tests show that the indoor temperature remains below 100°C for 90 minutes even if the outdoor temperature exceeds 800°C.
Drip tray fire resistant safety cabinet
An important option is the installation of drip trays and collection reservoirs. This can be done in the entire safety cabinet and prevents certain categories of substances from coming into contact with each other. In many cases this is prescribed in the standard or the PGS 15 guideline, but it can also be an extra option that gives the user some extra security.
Fire-resistant safety cabinet configuration
In practice, there are several other aspects to discuss, how should the cabinet be furnished, which options are necessary and which are 'nice to have', and how can the fire-resistant safety cabinet be used in combination with other laboratory products? For example, we can configure a safety cabinet that can be placed under our laminar flow cabinet for efficient use of space.
